About Our School

Hayes School serves the Chestnut Hill neighborhoods and has a population of about 430 students.

Our Approach to Teaching and Learning

Hayes School sets high expectations for students and for itself as a learning community. Educators lead with collaboration, celebration, care, and a strong commitment to providing a high-quality public education for every student.

Educators at Hayes are engaged in school-wide conversations around coaching and collaboration, educational equity, mindset, the connection between teaching practice and student outcomes, and how to nurture classroom and school cultures where students feel ownership of their learning. Families also bring an important perspective to this work, and the school welcomes their insights into the joys, struggles, and growth their children experience throughout the year.

Student Programs and Opportunities

Hayes fosters community in many ways, including school-wide celebrations of learning, student service opportunities, support for the GSA in grades 6-8, the Young Scholars Program for Black and Latinx students in grades 4-8, the Young Calculus Project in grades K-4, the METCO Connections mentoring program in grades K-8, and Student Council representatives in grades 4-8.

Family Partnership

The PTO plays an important role in the school community and organizes many events that encourage family participation. All families are members of the PTO, and Hayes is grateful for their ongoing partnership and support.

Our School Culture

Hayes staff see themselves as craftspeople and innovators who work purposefully to help students see themselves that way, too. As professionals, staff model risk-taking, learning from mistakes, and creating a sense of safety in classrooms so students have the courage to take educational risks in service of deeper learning.

Equity and Vision

Hayes also recognizes that risk-taking is not only in service of academic growth. The school strives for equity and social justice, using its voices and talents to uplift the entire community. This is Hayes School’s shared vision, its North Star, and the school remains committed to providing a high-quality education for all students.
